Notice Board

February 2012
Dear Friends
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Let us hope that 2012 is a happier, healthier and more
peaceful New Year.
Our best wishes to our patients, their families and the
many friends of Cancer Patient Support.
Again, 2011 has been a successful year not only withour
fundraising but enjoying some of the good days/evenings
when we have benefited from the proceeds. Three of
these were The Rat Pack who performed at Tala
Ampitheatre, Canines for Cancer Dog Show held at
Bona Mare Taverna, Yeroskipou and the Frog & Toad
Charity Evening, Coral Bay.
We hope you will join us at our various get-togethers
arranged throughout this year.
All the very best of wishes for 2012

We are very pleased to announce

A
MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
I
would like to thank you all for dedicating so much time
and for all your hard work over the year to support
patients in need, and raise funds for the Paphos
Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF). I
am positive that the patients and their families
appreciate all the effort you have made. Please keep it
up.
Another year has passed and unfortunately, there is no
solution to the fact that, our cancer patients have to
travel to Nicosia everyday, for many weeks to receive a
few minutes of radiotherapy. This is very inconvenient,
time-consuming and tiring. A serious effort by the
private sector to develop an Oncology and Radiotherapy
center in Pafos seems to have failed, due to the
financial crisis.
We
were also promised that an Oncology and Radiotherapy
center was going to open in Limassol General Hospital,
but, it is rumoured, that the plans have changed and
instead, a second center will be opening in Nicosia. It
is not right that Nicosia has two Oncology Centers and
patients from Limassol and Paphos have to travel back
and forth for hours everyday
to Nicosia in order to receive their treatment. This is
very unfortunate, unfair and inconvenient for the Paphos
patients and we must all fight against this decision,
and hopefully we will achieve our goal.
I
wish all a Very Merry Christmas and a New Year full of
Health, Happiness and Love.
May
God Bless You All.
Dr
Demetris Charalambides

A MESSAGE
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER, PASYKAF
I am
very happy to communicate to you through your quarterly
Newsletter and thank you all for your efforts and
support. The financial contribution and generous
support we receive from the Cancer Patients Support
Group is the main reason we are able to continue to
offer high quality home nursing and palliative care
services to our patients in Paphos.
During
2011 we received from the Support Group €70,000 as a
financial contribution and more than €3,000 on medical
and other equipment (much more than was initially
expected, due to the economic crisis). In addition,
many members of the CPSG have stepped up to the
challenge, and when we asked for your help, you were
there for us. Dolly, Peter and the rest of the Paphos
Charity Shop Team, we thank you! You are doing
incredible work and we are lucky to have you on our
team.
I am
sure that Mr. Tom Handley, Chairman of CPSG can name and
thank each and every one of you for your efforts and
contribution on other events and activities. So I
believe that by thanking Tom, it’s like I am thanking
each and every one of you.
Tom,
thank you for our excellent co-operation and for the
support and guidance you have given me. I am looking
forward to tackling with you the new challenges to come.
The
current year was projected to be a very difficult year
but we made it. Provided the Government does not cut
back on their grand commitment estimated to cover 10% of
our total costs, we will be able to have a better year
than 2010 and balance our end of year accounts. In
addition, our Home Care Nursing Team, in the first 10
months of 2011, was able to care for more than 137
patients, 13 more patients than all 2010.
2012 is
projected to be even more difficult. We at PASYKAF are
committed in our fight against cancer through education
and awareness on cancer prevention and early detection.
We are also committed to our mission to improve the
quality of life of all cancer patients and their
families through our services. We know that despite the
economic crisis we have no option but to succeed, and we
are happy to know that the CPSG shares the same values
and will always be by our side and support us.
We would
like once more to express our appreciation and wish
everyone Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Kind
regards
Nicolas
Philippou, General Manager, PASYKAF

OBITUARIES
George and Jean MUSCROFT
Sadly this year we have lost several long-standing
members of the Group.
We
are very sad to record the passing of both GEORGE and
JEAN MUSCROFT, members for many years, joining one year
after CPSG was started in 1995. George died on 28th
October and Jean on 21 November. Their graves are next
to each other in the Mesa Chorio cemetery.
George was a keen photographer and was always on hand to
take pictures for our Newsletter. Jean was very active
in all aspects of our work with her colourful outfits
attracting much attention at the Easter Stall, the
Christmas Eve event at the Market and the Bazaar. She
was a very efficient member of the editorial Team for
the Newsletter, which often included her poems.
They will both be sorely missed.
Both George and Jean were very ill during their last
days and we would like to pay tribute to the wonderful
help and care given to them by the nurses, the Helpline
Volunteers and Lynn Addy.

Tom POWELL
Tom
died suddenly in May this year.
He
came to Cyprus twelve years ago after a successful
career in the Customs Service. He not only supported
our group but was also active supporting both Hospices
in Paphos and the Army Benevolent Fund.
Generally he preferred to avoid the limelight but was
very active in the background. For several years he
prepared the mulled wine at our Christmas Party with the
Cypriot Patients and contributed the paper for the
Newsletter.
He
was a member of Aliathon Bowling Club and then the Coral
Bay Bowling Club.
Pat WOODFIELD
Pat
was a member for many years and actively supported our
events.
She
was treated successfully for cancer here in Cyprus. She
returned to England last year and unfortunately died
this year when her cancer returned.

Cancer
Awareness Campaign
Gina Ghyllier
and Louise Van Rooij, who so successfully organised our
Bra Campaign more than five years ago, continue their campaign to
raise Breast Cancer Awareness.
In conjunction
with Cyta they have now launched the 'Sunflower'
Campaign. Sunflower is an automated SMS Reminder
Service that has been developed to help improve the
efficiency of preventative medicine, in reducing
morbidity and mortality of women from breast and
cervical cancer in Cyprus. The service can be used by
any woman in possession of a local (Cypriot) mobile
phone number and women of all ages are encouraged to
register. Once registered they will automatically
receive a yearly SMS on their mobile phone as a reminder
that their Pap Test or Mammogram is due. The Reminder
Service, which is free of charge, is offered as a social
contribution by its creators. For more information
visit
www.sunflower.org.cy
Further note:
To further promote this
ongoing campaign approaches will be made to large
companies to encourage their staff to sign up.
Gina Ghillyer
is willing to talk to groups about the Campaign.
If 10,000
signatures are obtained, an approach will be made to the
European Union in the hope that they will give a grant
to finance the campaign.
Application
forms to join the scheme and also leaflets on the
prevention and early detection of Bowel Cancer are
available at the Day Centre.
SMS REMINDER
SERVICE
At the
AGM in March 2010 Gina Ghillyer gave us an update
on the progress of the Campaign. The
Sunflower Project donated Euro 10,000 to the
Support Group Funds this year, for which we are very
grateful.
The campaign to raise 10,000
signatures has continued with the support of CYTA,
PASYKAF and the Anti Cancer Society.
Sunflower lapel badges are for
sale - Euro 2 each.
Sunflower Mobile charms are
for sale - Euro 2 each available at Gina's Place or
